Clinical Audit - Setting The Sample Size

As an example, assume the Audit Standard is:

80% of adult dentate patients will have a BPE recorded.

If you looked at 10 records, and found 9 had a BPE, could you be sure that you had met the standard if this result was extrapolated to all your records?

No, because this sample is obviously too small.

If you looked at 1000 records, and found 929 had a BPE, you could be sure you met the standard overall, but looking at a thousand records is un-necessary: this sample is obviously too big.

You can use a "Standard Error" calculation to check whether your sample size is big enough, but not so big that you will waste effort.
What is the size of your sample?
How many meet the standard?
