Free course - no card required

Dental staff have an obligation to ensure they are trained in Basic Life Support and the management of cardiac emergencies, and updated regularly.

The UK Resuscitation Council recommends that CPR simulation training with mannequins should be used in addition to theoretical learning through attended or online courses.

This free course is a GDC Highly Recommended CPD Topic (Medical Emergencies).

This course is relevant to the whole dental team.

CPD Time: 2 hours (2 CE Credits)

Customer feedback on this course

  • Really clear and easy to follow. Liked the mix of videos and text to break it up.
  • A comprehensive guide to Medical emergencies and BLS. Great refresher course.
  • Very informative and simple to understand
  • Very good and certainly went into more dept than my usual courses/practical training. By helping me understand more I feel I will remember this better.
  • I thought this was a really well done elearning module. In particular I think its brilliant that you included the emotional impact of having to attend to a cardiac arrest.

Assessment: 12 MCQs. Pass mark 75%. more…

On passing the assessment you will immediately receive a GDC-recognised Enhanced CPD Certificate.

Access: You will have access for 12 months, and can take the course as often as you wish in this period.

Anticipated learning outcomes:
The learner will:
• know of and understand the various cardiac emergencies that might arise in and out of dental practice.
• recognise the signs and symptoms of different types of cardiac emergencies.
• know about and be able to undertake their management, with Basic Life Support skills if necessary.
• through achieving these outcomes, provide an improved level of service to their patients.

CPR, BLS and Cardiac Emergencies
Course Description

Essential Drugs Kit
This section covers the Resuscitation Council's recommended emergency drugs for dental practices, such as Glyceryl Trinitrate, Adrenaline, and Aspirin. It emphasises the importance of maintaining a well-stocked emergency drug kit and the quick administration of drugs in emergencies.

Basic Life Support
Learn the fundamentals of Basic Life Support (BLS), including airway management, lung ventilation, chest compressions, and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This section covers the primary survey and CPR techniques to handle cardiac emergencies.

Covid and CPR
Due to the risks posed by Covid-19, modifications in CPR protocols are necessary. This section discusses the current guidelines for resuscitation, including hands-only CPR, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during emergencies.

Assessing the Sick/Unconscious Patient
Discover the DRABC (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) approach to assess and manage the sick or unconscious patient. This section helps you identify medical emergencies early and guides you through appropriate interventions, including CPR.

The AED in Action
Look at the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in cardiac arrest situations. This section explains how AEDs diagnose arrhythmias, provide shocks, and assist in CPR, with a focus on the importance of rapid defibrillation.

AED Training Video
A practical training video demonstrating the use of an AED in an emergency, covering key steps such as pad placement, analysing heart rhythms, and delivering shocks. The video also discusses AED maintenance and checks.

Adult CPR
This section focuses on performing CPR on adults, including compression techniques, appropriate depth and rate, and the integration of AED use. It highlights the importance of immediate action in cardiac arrest cases.

Child and Baby CPR
Learn the differences in CPR techniques for children and babies, including using one hand for children and two fingers for babies. This section explains the recommended ratio of compressions to breaths for healthcare professionals.

Emotional Impact of CPR
CPR can have significant emotional effects on the rescuer, potentially leading to stress or PTSD. This section discusses coping strategies, such as talking to friends, engaging in relaxing activities, and seeking professional support if needed.

Myocardial Infarction
A myocardial infarction, or heart attack, results from a blocked coronary artery. This section covers risk factors, symptoms, and immediate management, including the use of oxygen, Glyceryl Trinitrate, and Aspirin.

Angina Pectoris
Angina is chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. This section covers signs, symptoms, and management strategies for angina, including the use of Glyceryl Trinitrate spray and the importance of patient reassurance.

Course Completion
Participants will take a multiple-choice exam and receive a GDC-compliant CPD certificate upon passing. The course emphasises the practical skills needed to respond to cardiac emergencies in a dental setting.
